Disrupted sleep or sleep deprivation affects:

  • growth hormone – controls body fat and muscle
  • production of leptin hormone – tells body when it should feel full
  • secretion of cortisol  –  stress hormone causing high calorie cravings
  • reduced daytime physical activity including natural movement and fidgeting
  • NSF study – 1/4 adults ate more than usual following night of inadequate sleep.
